Re-basing the Destroyer Cult (getting rid of horrible GW flying base)

Postby sjjones » 01 Apr 2017, 20:05

So, as Big lad will no doubt testify, I'm frequently moaning about the GW plastic flying stems (and how horrible they are). Indeed, I've had many occasion now where I've had to drill out a piece of the broken off stem from a model - not something I particularly like to do! So, finally, getting my backside in gear, I decided to finally do something about it. The problem is, 1 x Destroyer Lord, 9 x Destroyers, 3 x Heavy Destroyers (and I'll likely do my Ghost Ark and Doomsday Ark too!). So, 15 bases in total - no rest for the wicked - especially as I want these done by the time the tournament on the 29th April comes (yes, my filthy destroyers may be making an appearance!)!

I purchased 15 60mm round wooden bases from Norfolk Boardgames, Wargames and Collectables (that amazing aladdins cave of a shop in Gt. Yarmouth), Improvising with a ring of polystyrene but also adding a little metal rod in the centre which the model will just nicely sit on. I've gone for a simple "rocky" base too. Off to a good start, but already the difference is striking.

... only another 14 left :)

I'm feeling you pain on this one Steve. I've got some force (couch China) world 30k jetbikes and the cast isn't the greatest for the flying stand connection point.

Also I've spent the last 3 hours re-basing marines tonight. My fingers a red raw.

hahaha as if we're all re-basing models!

15 bases done (whole Destroyer Cult plus both my Arks). Will get around to doing two more for my Barges too at some stage as well as another 6 on smaller bases for the tomb blades.

Now to seal the bases (simple layer of slightly watered down PVA will do the trick) and then for painting (obviously not with sprays :D )

I'm looking forward to seeing these Steve.
I'll take inspiration for my jetbikes.

Well, bases sealed with PVA and now base coated grey - already taking shape!

Once the paint dries, just a load of dry brushing to go as well as sort the wooden base part.

Rocks kinda of done just about - after lots of dry brushing. Now just the for the flat parts of the base - might use one of the GW technicals for ease.

Just about there now, just a little wash and perhaps a slight dry brush. Used some of the GW texture paint in the end.

Well, just about there - felted the underside of the bases so they're easy on game mats etc (I think it adds a touch of quality too mind!)

A simple colour / line system to identify each base to each model.

...and the re-basing is now complete! Trazyn proudly shows off Kheros and the Destroyer Cult (as well as two arks) he "collected" from Imotekh :) On a serious note though, I'm quite pleased with how this has come out - much much better than the standard GW crap flying bases.
